Earlier today, Dr San Sunkaraneni, a general practitioner in the city, reached out to us to speak more about Children’s ENT, the causes and the solutions. GuildfordENT provides this service via its website under the direction of Dr. Sunkaraneni.
The three most common ENT problems that children can suffer from are tonsillitis, glue ear, and sleep apnoea. Several of these issues are common and easily treatable, particularly in the early stages of life, but if left untreated, sleep apnea can have serious consequences later.
There is no doubt that tonsillitis is one of the most common conditions affecting children (and some adults as well). There is a high chance that a high fever, as well as breathing difficulties, will accompany the sore throat.
The tonsils, along with the lymph nodes in the body, are designed to consume microorganisms as they enter it. Additionally, they teach the immune system to recognize microorganisms in the future by removing them. Therefore, they contribute to a child’s immunity.
It is very common among children to suffer from Otitis media with effusion (OME or Glue Ear). The condition can cause hearing loss that may be noticed first by parents or healthcare providers due to poor language and speech development.
Additionally, it can cause recurrent middle ear infections, which are distressing for both the child and the parents. Infections in the middle ear cavity can sometimes cause a perforation (hole) in the eardrum because pressure builds up inside the cavity and the infection bursts through the eardrum.
A child may start snoring from birth, or even at an early age. Some medical conditions can result in symptoms of restricted airways due to anatomical differences such as receding jaws or weak tissues/muscles in the throat. A larger tonsil and adenoids may be responsible in most children.
