Van Cleef & Arpels – Hard Work
The dear Estelle Arpels and Alfred van Cleef joined thanks to the jewelry industry with which they were both associated, and already in 1895, the couple got married. Eleven years later, Alfred and his three Estelle brothers – Charles and later Louis and Julien – decided to start his own jewelry company, Van Cleef & Arpels. Their first salon was opened at 22 Place Vendôme in Paris, near Lalique and the Ritz Hotel. Initially, the partners invested all the earned money in more stores. Thanks to this, in 1910 another one was opened in Nice, in 1921 in Cannes, and in 1935 in Monte Carlo. In 1939, a boutique was opened in New York, thanks to which the company began its international expansion, the next step was a salon in Palm Beach (1940).
Bold projects and investments
The brand was also known for its experiments with exotic materials, colored varnishes and enamels, and multi-colored gems. These bold solutions made Van Cleef & Arpels quickly found itself at the forefront of the most popular jewelry companies in the world. It also became the first French jewelry company to open showrooms in Japan and China.
